Q.1 What is the process of photosynthesis?

Ans: Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants and some other organisms convert light energy into chemical energy in the form of glucose. This process occurs in the chloroplasts of the plant cells and involves the conversion of carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen through the action of chlorophyll pigments.

Q.2 What is the role of enzymes in the process of digestion? 

Ans: Enzymes are essential for the process of digestion as they catalyze the breakdown of large molecules of food into smaller molecules that can be easily absorbed by the body. Enzymes such as amylase, lipase and protease break down carbohydrates, fats and proteins respectively into their smaller components that allowing for their absorption and utilization by the body. Without enzymes the process of digestion would be much slower and less efficient.

Q.3 What is the role of hormones in control and coordination in animals?

Ans: Hormones play a critical role in control and coordination in animals by regulating various physiological processes such as growth and development, metabolism and reproductive functions. They act as chemical messengers that are secreted by glands and travel through the bloodstream to target cells and organs, triggering specific responses. For example the hormone insulin regulates blood sugar levels by promoting the uptake of glucose by cells, while the hormone adrenaline increases heart rate and blood pressure during stress or exercise.

Q.4 How does the nervous system coordinate and control the movement of skeletal muscles in animals?

Ans: The nervous system coordinates and controls the movement of skeletal muscles in animals through the use of nerve impulses. Nerve impulses are electrical signals that travel along nerve fibers and are generated by the brain and spinal cord. When a nerve impulse reaches a skeletal muscle it causes the muscle to contract which results in movement. The nervous system also controls the timing and sequence of muscle contractions to coordinate movement. For example the brain sends signals to different muscle groups to coordinate the movement of the arm and hand during writing.

Q.5 How do asexual reproduction occur in organisms?

Ans: Asexual reproduction is a type of reproduction that occurs without the involvement of meiosis or fertilization. In asexual reproduction an organism produces offspring that are genetically identical to itself. This can occur through processes such as binary fission, budding, fragmentation and vegetative reproduction. In binary fission, the organism splits into two identical copies. In budding a small outgrowth forms on the parent organism which eventually separates and develops into a new organism. In fragmentation the parent organism breaks apart and each piece develops into a new organism. In vegetative reproduction, the parent organism produces specialized structures such as roots, stems or leaves that can develop into new individuals.

Q.6 How do sexual reproduction occur in organisms?

Ans: Sexual reproduction is a type of reproduction that involves the fusion of gametes which are specialized reproductive cells that contain half the number of chromosomes as the parent organism. In animals the gametes are called sperm and eggs. In plants the gametes are called pollen and ovules. During sexual reproduction the genetic material from the sperm and egg combine to form a new organism with a unique combination of genetic traits. This process is called fertilization. The new organism also receives half of its genetic information from each parent which leads to greater genetic diversity among the offspring. Meiosis is the process of cell division that produces the gametes.

Q.7 What is the difference between a gene and an allele? 

Ans: A gene is a segment of DNA that codes for a specific trait or characteristic such as eye color or height. An allele is a variant of a gene that meaning it can have different variations of the same trait such as brown eyes or blue eyes.

Q.8 What is the difference between dominant and recessive genes? 

Ans: Dominant genes are genes that will always express their trait when present regardless of the presence of other genes. Recessive genes on the other hand will only express their trait when paired with another recessive gene of the same trait. For example the gene for brown eyes is dominant while the gene for blue eyes is recessive. If an individual has one dominant gene for brown eyes and one recessive gene for blue eyes their eyes will be brown.

Ans: The main causes of air pollution include industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, burning of fossil fuels, deforestation and agricultural practices.
